carat is a unit of weight for precious stones, most often for diamonds. 1 carat = 200 milligrams (0.200 grams).

karat, when used with gold, is a unit of purity. Pure gold is known as 24-karat. Since pure gold is very soft and easily malleable, gold jewelry is usually mixed with a metal like copper or silver. Each karat indicates 1/24th of the whole. So let’s take 18k, or 18 karat gold as an example. This means that it is made up of 18 parts gold and 6 parts metal, and contains only 75% of real gold (because 18/24 = 75%).

If you want to get your gold tested for free to determine if it’s real gold or fake gold or to find out the karat value, Velasquez Jewelers and VA Gold Buyers can test your gold for free in a matter of seconds.
