While there are tons of little details that can drive you insane when trying to choose a diamond for an engagement ring, there are basically 4 main options you can choose from when it comes to diamond buying which I will simplify:
1) Shape – they come in various shapes: round, princess (which is square on top like an upside down pyramid), emerald (rectangular on top), pear shape and more as you can see below. The most traditional shapes are round, square/princess, and emerald.
2) Color which is categorized by letters to grade the amount of color or tint it has.
3) Clarity which is how “perfect” a diamond is blemish-wise, so in other words if it has defects, and how big or how many there are determines this rating below.
4) Size also known as carats. A carat is a unit of weight for precious stones, most often for diamonds. 1 carat = 200 milligrams (0.200 grams). If she has thin fingers, for example, half a carat is fine too. Some people just want the “bling” factor, so then they will go for size and the color, while lowering the clarity to stay within their budget. Below is a chart for a common ring finger size with the various sizes of the diamond so you can get an idea of the diamond size for her.
So overall, if you have a preference, just let us know and if you go to any of your local jewelry stores, go ahead and shop around for the pricing since you’ll find that you won’t beat our prices and quality. In terms of the wedding band set for her, the diamond is the most important and expensive part and we can give you thousands of designs to choose from online or in the store.
If you want a better grading in Clarity, for example, we’d have to look for a smaller size diamond depending on your budget, but if you’re set on a certain size, we’ll tell you the best deal for your budget.
